The philatelic history of the area is even more diverse than suggested by this list, shaped in part by the political history of the Caribbean islands. From 1890 to 1903, for example, only stamps inscribed "Leeward Islands" were authorized for use in Antigua, Dominica, Montserrat, Nevis and St. Christopher (St. Kitts), even though each of the "presidencies" had its own issues until then. In the Virgin Islands, concurrent use of the Leeward Islands stamps and the local issues was allowed, and new stamps were issued in 1899. In 1903, Antigua, Dominica, Montserrat and the now joined presidency of St. Kitts-Nevis (later St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla) began releasing their own stamps, which could be used concurrently with the "federal" issues. Leeward Islands stamps were discontinued in 1956.

Other islands issued separate issues in the past Trinidad (1851-1909) and Tobago (1879-96), for example. In more recent times, stamps have been released for such entities as Barbuda and Redonda (dependencies of Antigua), Caicos Islands (part of the Turks & Caicos Is.), Cayes of Belize (part of Belize), Grenada Grenadines, Grenadines of St. Vincent (including issues for Bequia and Union Island), St. Kitts and Nevis (which now form a single country).
